6 Week Classes - Portrait Drawing and Painting

In this course, you will learn how to draw and paint a portrait. The instructor will guide you through the techniques that will help you in getting a good likeness of your subject/model. This class is recommended for beginner and intermediate artists.

Week 1: Theme: Introduction to the general proportions of the head and face in full frontal, three quarters and profile views. Exercise: You will make structured drawings based on the ideas of proportion.

Week 2: Theme: Learning to break down complex forms and simplify them to start a drawing. Exercise: Using a plaster cast, you will start a drawing implementing simplified outline and mapping of the facial structure.

Week 3: Theme: Approaches to shading. Exercise: Working with a live model, you will make a complete portrait drawing using the techniques learned.

Week 4: Theme: Portrait painting in grisaille. Exercise: Using only 2 colors, you will paint a portrait on canvas in oils. The instructor will guide you step-by-step towards achieving a good likeness of the subject.

Week 5: Theme: Painting a full color portrait in 2 sessions. (week 1 of 2) Exercise: On a larger canvas, you will work to achieve a good structure with an underdrawing. Then the instructor will then discuss mixing convincing flesh tones before beginning the painting.

Week 6: Theme: Painting a full color portrait in 2 sessions. (week 2 of 2) Exercise: You will complete the painting you began on the previous session. /p>

Materials - Paints and oils are provided by JCAS. Surfaces, Sketching materials, Brushes, and palette provided by the student.
