Kids Academy: “Music Instrument Making Class”
Students will build small musical instruments from simple straw oboes and rubber band guitars to semi-complex electrified stringed instruments. Directions for most of the instruments built will be from Bart Hopkins' books http://windworld.com/catalog .
Students will be taught simple rhythmic principals, basic ideas on melodic phrasing and aspects to song structure.
Graphic Scores (visually-described scoring) will be explained and used to produce musicAnalog tape recorders will record "songs" that are created in class using PZM microphones A DVD of video recordings during class projects will be given to all students at the end of "semester."
Group collaborative work, essential to learning, will be incorporated as often as possible.
Discussions on inventors of musical instruments (Benjamin Franklin, Adolf Sax, Harry Partch, and Bart Hopkin) may give way to new ideas!
